Robert Gilbert
Robert Gilbert, MD began his connection with UCSF in 1968 as an NIH fellow in the Arthritis Department, working under the mentorship of doctors Eph Engleman and Henry Epstein. He cared for Dr. Engleman's patients and did research on what was then called Reiter’s syndrome, later renamed due to Reiter's Nazi affiliation. After completing his orthopedic surgery training in 1972, Dr. Engleman invited him back to teach in the arthritis clinic, where he worked for decades. Robert became a board member about 20-25 years ago and remains passionate about providing excellent care and research for arthritis patients. His connection to UCSF runs deep, as one of his daughters is also a UCSF graduate and now practices as an OB/GYN in the East Bay. Although much of his orthopedic career took place at Shriners Hospital and California Pacific Medical Center, his teaching was closely tied to UCSF, cementing his lifelong dedication to the Russell Engleman Rheumatology Research Center.
